Everyday techniques
Several hundred snapshots of Kharkov, USSR were taken during the dreary winter months of 1984. Mikhailov cheaply developed the snapshots at night in his toilet. He then randomly selected and glued some of the photographs onto the back of someone’s finished dissertation. Over a period of several years Mikhailov scribbled in autobiographical comments, philosophical fragments and notes on photography in the empty spaces around two snapshots per dissertation page. The produced object was subtitled “discussions with oneself.”

Some notes on surrealism and organisation

The surrealist movement, a reputedly avant-garde moment, has long been a covert source of tangential commentary on the organisational practices of intimate affinities, on the temporary homology of heterogeneous desiring-energies. After the mid-30s, when a much sought-after rapprochement with the French Communist Party dissolved into enlightening acrimony, the various outernational surrealist groups have had cause to by-pass a more formal manifest approach to organisation and opted instead for loose affiliations, for an ourganisational ethos conducted by practice and the materials of that practice. For the surrealists there has been no ‘organisational question’; instead, there have been practices-of-life that inform the quality of relations-between. From ‘fortuitous encounter’ and the ‘sleeping-fit sessions’ to ‘occultation’ and identity dissolution the surrealists have indirectly, by means of poetic rather than discursive texts, pursued a non-alienated investigation into the ‘structuring power of passion’.

It has been the practice of groups to expel, to exercise the ‘sovereign ban’.These groups take kudos from expulsions, they rehone their position, and grow closer together. The one expelled is normally a one that troubles the group; the unconscious anxiety of the group is personified in the expulsed one. Cohesion grows in such cases because the group, based to a large extent on shared belief and an interest-consensus, can, once the anxiety is expelled, untroubeledly continue believing and idealising in the same way.

Radio Free Robots: Silicone Carne – Art Kill Art 01

Art Kill Art label out of France asks the question “What does it mean to produce vinyl records in the digital era?” The sound artist collective Radio Free Robots explores the possibilities and limitations of vinyl records as a medium for manipulation. The white 12” is packaged with a lengthy perforated paper printout that lists a lot of technical information such as what computers and other equipment was used to produce the robot voices, when these various sound collages were performed and a statement of purpose written in several languages. The external sleeve robot graphic is one visualization of robots of the future, while the inside graphic charts frequencies and sound levels over time (cycles per second). Non-music, experimental collage, spoken word, rhythmic dissonance, or something entirely different? A radio show transmission recording or electronic sound performance? Robotic philosophical ramblings interwoven with noises, beats, glitchy metallic sounds produce a strange, provocative cacophony.
